L. Read the test below;
A few hundred years after the Anglo-Saxons settled in England, another
invasion took place, from the North-East, that of the Danes, and the whole
North-Eastern half of England was ruled by the Danish kings for a while.
Finally, and even more important, there came the great Norman invasion. The
Normans were "North-men" and, like the Danes, had originally come from
Scandinavia; but they had settled in the part of Northern France, still known as
Normandy, and adopted the French language.
In the year 1066, Duke William of Normandy claimed the English throne and,
after defeating the Saxon King Harold in the battle of Hastings, he conquered
the whole country. He was crowned William I of England and was named
William the Conqueror.
The Saxons became a subject people under William the Conqueror and they
were ruled over by Norman nobles. English was the language of the common
people and Norman French was the language of the king and his court.
Eventually, however, the speech of the common people prevailed and the use
of French died out; but the common people had already absorbed some of it,
and many everyday expressions in English are of French origin.
