Iasi has been the capital of Moldova from 1564 to 1859, one of the capitals of the United Romanian Principalities. In 2011 it was the fourth city in Romania, when it comes to size. In the year 1600 Mihai Viteazul consecrated the union of Moldova, Tara Romaneasca and Transilvania. In the year 1830 was established the first library of Moldova, the library of the naturalists society in Iasi. In the year 1839 the first romanian exhibition takes place, "the exhibition of exotic plants and flowers". In the year 1856 appears the first botanical garden in Romania. In the year 1860 takes place the inauguration of the University in iasi, the first romanian university (The Alexandru-Ioan Cuza university)
The Iasi municipality is situated in eastern Moldova. The city is located on the Bahlui River. Thanks to its explansion, Iasi is known for the legend of the 7 hills (Cele 7 Coline).
Iasi is an important economic center of Romania. Its main industries are: metallurgy, medicine, textiles, vehicle parts and the food industry.
In Iasi there is also the "St. Nicolae Domnesc" church, the oldest one from the city, foundation of Stephan the Great. The St. Spiridon hospital is the biggest one from the Moldavian area. The city of Iasi has plenty of buildings and historical monuments such as: The Hut of Ion Creanga, the metropolitan cathedral, the Cetatuia monastery and the Barboi church.
In the disctrict of Iasi there are also: the Ruginoasa lordly palace of Alexandru Ioan-Cuza and the Cotnari and the wine region.
