1. What coming-of-age festivals exist in your country?
In my country, we have a coming-of-age celebration called "Quinceañera" for girls turning 15, which is a significant cultural event in many Latin American countries. Additionally, we have "Sweet 16" parties which are common in the United States, celebrating girls turning 16. Boys often have "Bar Mitzvah" at age 13 or "Bat Mitzvah" for girls at the same age in Jewish communities.
2. Are they similar or different to the Korean festival?
The Quinceañera and Sweet 16 parties are somewhat similar to the Korean coming-of-age festival "Seijin no Hi" in that they mark the transition from childhood to adulthood with celebrations, family gatherings, and special ceremonies. However, the ages and cultural practices differ. For instance, Seijin no Hi in Japan, another Asian example, celebrates 20-year-olds with ceremonies and wearing traditional attire, whereas Quinceañeras are celebrated at 15 and often involve religious ceremonies and elaborate parties.
3. How many people take part in them?
The number of people participating in these festivals varies. Quinceañeras and Sweet 16 parties can range from small family gatherings to large parties with hundreds of guests. Bar and Bat Mitzvahs are typically attended by family, friends, and members of the community, usually numbering between 50 to 200 people.
4. Are they losing or gaining popularity?
The popularity of these festivals fluctuates. Quinceañeras remain very popular in Latin American communities, while Sweet 16 parties are still common in the United States. Bar and Bat Mitzvahs continue to be important rites of passage in Jewish culture. However, there is a trend towards more personalized and sometimes more modest celebrations, reflecting changes in cultural and economic factors.
5. At what age are young people considered adults where you live?
In my country, young people are legally considered adults at 18. This is the age at which they can vote, sign contracts, and are subject to adult laws and responsibilities.
6. What can you do when you're an adult?
Once you are considered an adult, you gain several rights and responsibilities. You can vote in elections, join the military, enter into legal contracts, get married without parental consent, and be fully responsible for your actions under the law. Additionally, you can apply for loans, buy property, and in some places, consume alcohol and tobacco.
